Task
Develop a recreational trail corridor representative of the landscape in the Municipality of Whitestone while ensuring no negative impacts to the local population of Massasauga.
Client
Discovery Routes Trails Organization is a not-for-profit group that promotes and provides administration services to the development of recreational trails in Northeastern Ontario.
Challenge
The selected trail corridor had to showcase the unique local landscape features without negatively impacting the Massasauga and their habitat.
Solution
FRi Ecological Services identified the key critical habitats for the Massasauga within the study area that included both gestation and hibernation habitat. The identified trail corridor showcased the local landscape while avoiding known critical habitat of the Massasauga.
Result
The Client received a Letter of Advice approval and the Municipality constructed the trail as prescribed.
